Wallaceburg Concert Band: A New Chapter

As we approach our 10th anniversary, the Wallaceburg Concert Band (WCB) has exciting news to share. Since our founding, the Wallaceburg and District Council for the Arts (WDCA) has played a crucial role in supporting us—providing charitable status for grant applications, credibility in negotiating a temporary agreement to use LKDSB instruments until we could establish funding to help ourselves, and liability insurance to cover our events.

For nine years, we’ve operated under the WDCA’s umbrella and guidance, growing into a well-respected, financially responsible, musically accomplished organization, and perhaps one of the greatest success stories in Wallaceburg history. With this firmly established reputation of excellence in our operations, proven stewardship in financial matters of our organization, and a continual rise in our level of musical performance, the time has arrived to become masters of our own destiny, and as such, we are beginning the process of incorporating as our own independent non-profit.

Beginning the process of incorporating and operating the WCB as a separate non-profit organization has come after careful consideration. The decision to venture into this new chapter comes as part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the longevity and sustainability of the Wallaceburg Concert Band while continuing to provide a vital cultural and musical presence in the community. We believe that this step of establishing ourselves as a non-profit will allow us to better manage and streamline our operations, as well as provide us with new opportunities for growth, support, and collaboration. Our relationship with the WDCA has always been of a financial nature, and while our artistic and programming decisions, concerts and asset acquisition, have always been made by the Band Executive, this transition marks an important move toward full self-governance.

The community has long been very supportive of our organization and we have always kept our concerts free to the public, only accepting freewill donations with zero pressure to contribute. In moving out on our own however, we will be encountering significant legal costs and a temporary inability to apply for grant funding, leading us to appeal to the public to consider helping us out by way of donating to our project of seeking independence.

The Wallaceburg Concert Band recently received a $5000.00 donation towards the purchase of musical instruments and supporting equipment from the Wallaceburg Kinsmen Club. Kinsmen President Dr. Kyle Charlton said “this donation from the Wallaceburg Kinsmen speaks to the Kinsmen’s strong support for organizations which are striving to make Wallaceburg and the surrounding area a better place. The WCB is an example of a large number of individuals who are working together to bring first class musical entertainment for all ages to enjoy. We are pleased to be able to help by donating to this worthwhile group of dedicated musicians.”
